The Lowdown
The Media Maratón Ruta de la Reconquista is an annual half marathon in Cangas de Onís, in the Picos de Europa region of Asturias, northern Spain, organized by Club Cangas de Onís Atletismo with the town's municipal sports board. First run in the late 1980s, it is the oldest road race on the Asturian athletics calendar and one of the region's most popular sporting events. The certified 21.097 km course starts and finishes on Avenida de Covadonga in Cangas de Onís and runs out along the N-625 to the Royal Site of Covadonga and its basilica before returning, climbing roughly 10 km toward Covadonga on grades of 8-10% before a fast return leg. The race is capped at up to 1,500 runners; its 2026 edition drew a record 1,500 entrants, nearly 500 of them women. The event has carried title sponsorship from utility company EDP (through the EDP Foundation) across many recent editions, alongside Coca-Cola and local Asturian sponsors. Prize money totals 2,000 EUR for the top overall finishers, with 750 EUR bonuses for breaking the men's (1:06:05) or women's (1:14:14) course records. Entrants must be at least 18 years old on race day, and the maximum completion time is 2 hours 30 minutes. The next edition, the 39th running, is projected for Saturday, May 29, 2027, following the event's long-standing cadence of the last Saturday in May.
