The Lowdown

The Media Maratón Volta á Ría, also known as the Memorial Adolfo Ros, is an annual half marathon organized jointly by the municipalities of Neda, Fene, Ferrol, and Narón in the Ferrolterra area of Galicia, Spain. First run in 1986, the race honors Adolfo Ros, a young athlete and lifeguard from Neda who drowned in 1985 while rescuing three children caught in a rip current at Doniños beach. The roughly 21-kilometer course covers paved roads looping through all four organizing municipalities along the Ría de Ferrol estuary, starting and finishing at Camiño do Regueiro in Neda near the AP-9 highway access. The 39th edition ran on Sunday, December 14, 2025, drawing close to 850 participants, including 723 entrants in the half marathon itself, plus wheelchair, handbike, and visually-impaired divisions and a full slate of free youth races. Entry has historically cost just €7 for adults, with children's races free, and registration runs through the Carreiras Galegas platform. Based on the event's annual December cadence, the 40th edition is projected for December 2026, though the exact date and registration window had not yet been published as of this writing. The race is included in the Galician Athletics Federation calendar and remains one of Ferrolterra's most established community sporting traditions.
