The Lowdown

Medio Maratón Puerto México is an annual half marathon held along the malecón (waterfront boardwalk) of Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz -- the Gulf coast port city long known by its historic name, Puerto México. Organized by Ana María Serrano and Armando Casanova with support from the Coatzacoalcos municipal government's sports department (Dimude) and its Department of Education, the race starts and finishes at the Hemiciclo a los Niños Héroes and offers three distances on the same morning: 5K, 10K, and the half marathon (21K), all beginning at 6:00 AM. The inaugural edition ran Sunday, November 9, 2025, drawing runners from Córdoba, Orizaba, Xalapa, the city of Veracruz, Villahermosa, Chiapas, and Mexico City, with a 400-runner field cap and a guaranteed 60,000-peso prize pool split among the top three men and women in each age category (Juvenil 13-17 for the 5K; Libre 18-39 across all three distances; Máster 40-49 for the 10K and 21K; Veterano 50+ for the 21K). Every finisher receives a timing chip, bib, commemorative shirt, and medal, and the course is supported by road-safety marshals, hydration at eight points along the route, first-aid services, and post-race recovery massage from physiotherapists. Registration runs exclusively through the Gran Retto platform. Medio Maratón Puerto México is a distinct event from the similarly named Medio Maratón Puerto de Veracruz, held roughly 150 km north in the city of Veracruz each January -- the two races share no organizer, course, or date.

Inaugural edition held Sunday, November 9, 2025, on the Coatzacoalcos malecón; organized by Ana María Serrano and Armando Casanova with support from the municipal sports department (Dimude) and Department of Education, aiming to promote sport and boost local tourism/economic activity.

Field capped at 400 runners; shirt size only guaranteed for registrations completed by October 20, 2025 (2025 edition).

Guaranteed 60,000-peso prize pool for the 2025 edition, distributed among the top three men's and women's finishers in each age category and distance.

Coatzacoalcos has previously hosted other malecón-based half marathons under different names and organizers (e.g. a 'Medio Maratón Olmeca' series ran in 2023-2024). Public sources do not establish whether Medio Maratón Puerto México is a continuation of that series under a new name or a separate new event; as of its 2025 debut it runs under new organizers via the Gran Retto platform.

Coatzacoalcos was historically named 'Puerto México' from 1899 to 1936, which the race name references; it should not be confused with the city of Veracruz's own 'Medio Maratón Puerto de Veracruz,' a separate long-running race about 150 km to the north.
