The Lowdown
The Mitja Marató Ciutat de Balaguer is an annual half marathon in Balaguer, a small city on the Segre river in the province of Lleida, Catalonia, organized by Club Esportiu Runner's Balaguer with the support of the Balaguer town council (Paeria de Balaguer). First held around 1990 and run every year since except 2021 (cancelled due to COVID-19), it reached its 37th edition on March 8, 2026, when nearly 800 runners took part across the half marathon, a 10K and a 5K jogging race, all starting together from Plaça del Mercadal at 9:30 AM. The half marathon covers a certified 21.097 km and is homologated by the Catalan Athletics Federation. For most editions the course has followed a country loop linking Balaguer with the nearby villages of Gerb and Sant Llorenç de Montgai; the 2026 edition instead used a newly certified circuit entirely within Balaguer's urban area, after organizers were unable to secure authorization for the classic Balaguer-Gerb-Sant Llorenç route, and it is not yet confirmed whether the traditional route returns for 2027. The 2026 edition also joined the Catalan Athletics Federation's official road-race circuit and featured Spanish Olympic marathoner and former world half marathon champion Martín Fiz as an official pacer for the 1 hour 24 minute group. Registration for the half marathon has recently run on a five-tier price ladder from 15 EUR for the earliest entrants up to 23 EUR, with a Joma finisher sweatshirt guaranteed for the first 250 registrants; the 10K and 5K have used separate, lower fee ladders. Bib pickup is typically held the evening before the race at the Pavelló del Col·legi Àngel Guimerà, with same-day pickup also available. The next edition, the 38th, is projected for Sunday, March 14, 2027, following the event's recent cadence of the second Sunday of March (2025: March 9; 2026: March 8). Official 2027 dates, pricing and course details had not yet been published as of research date.
