The Lowdown
The Mitja Marató de la Garrotxa is an annual half marathon held each spring in Olot, the capital of Catalonia's volcanic La Garrotxa region. Organized by Club Natació Olot, the race pairs its 21.1 km half marathon with an accompanying 10K popular race, both starting and finishing at the club's facilities in the city center. The course loops out through the Vall d'en Bas countryside, passing the villages of La Pinya and El Mallol with open views of the Santa Magdalena and Puigsacalm peaks before returning through Olot itself, gaining roughly 226 meters over the half marathon distance. The race is known locally as the 'Mitja del Pernil' for its signature finisher prize: a whole cured ham for half marathon finishers within the time limit, and a selection of cured meats for 10K finishers, alongside a technical t-shirt for every entrant. A euro from each registration supports Càritas Garrotxa, and runners can also add a symbolic 'Dorsal Zero' bib to donate without competing. The 2026 edition, the 30th, drew a record field of roughly 1,000 runners across both distances while doubling as the Girona provincial half marathon championship. The 31st Mitja Marató de la Garrotxa returns on March 7, 2027, with registration already open through the organizer's DSport platform.
