Oldenburg Marathon
The Lowdown
The Oldenburg Marathon, run since 2018 under title sponsorship from regional utility EWE as the EWE Marathon, is a fall marathon in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, Germany, built around the 'Oldenburg Five' concept: instead of a fixed route, the race starts from one of five towns surrounding Oldenburg (past editions have started in Wardenburg and Edewecht), tracing a scenic course through villages and countryside before finishing on the historic Schlossplatz in the heart of the city. The nearly flat route mixes rural asphalt and gravel roads with Oldenburg's city center for the final 10 kilometers. Held alongside a half marathon, a 10K, a 5K, a half marathon relay, and a children's race, the full event draws over 7,000 registered runners across all distances each year (roughly 700 in the marathon itself), and the 2026 edition sold out its marathon and half marathon fields months before race day. Race day starts at 9:00am with a six-hour marathon cutoff (3:00pm) at the finish, and pacers are provided for finish times between 3:30 and 5:30 hours. Runners who complete all five starting-point routes across multiple editions earn an exclusive 'Oldenburg Five' finisher medal.
