WVV Marathon Würzburg
The Lowdown
The WVV Marathon Würzburg is Franconia's spring classic, held annually in Würzburg, Bavaria on the banks of the Main River. Organized by Stadtmarathon Würzburg e.V. and sponsored by WVV (Würzburger Versorgungs- und Verkehrs-GmbH) under a sponsorship agreement extended through 2028, the event reached its 24th edition in May 2026 and returns for a 25th edition on May 23, 2027, with registration already open. The course is flat and officially measured, tracing the Main riverbank and central Würzburg past the old town; the start and finish moved in 2026 to the Kranenkai riverside plaza between the Main and the Congress Centrum Würzburg (CCW). Alongside the full marathon (42.2 km), runners can enter the WVV Half Marathon (21.1 km, with the option to switch down from the marathon at the halfway point), the MetaComp 10K FunRun, a Relay Marathon, and separate children's and youth races. The event is one of the few marathons in Germany offering Boston Marathon qualification. Around 6,000 runners took part across all distances in 2026, and the marathon finish line closes at 14:30, giving full-distance runners a roughly 5.5-hour time limit.
